Who Should Attend?

The SMSTS refresher course aims to:Improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issuesIdentify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation, and new working practices.ObjectivesAt the end of the period of training, delegates will be aware of and be able to implement:All updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a managerNew guidance and industry best practiceTheir duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.

Joining Instructions

The refresher course is only for delegates who have previously passed the five-day construction Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or subsequent refresher course, and hold a valid SMSTS certificate. Evidence must be provided to the training provider of their website a delegate cannot provide a copy of their certificate, the online card checker can be used to establish if a delegate currently holds a valid SMSTS certificate: available on request/If an individual cannot be located on the system and no evidence of their certificate can be found, they will have to attend the full Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) website to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require delegates to re-enter the scheme by completing the full SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme.

Delegates taking the SMSTS Refresher course should have a light overview of the learning outcomes listed below:Module 11. Health and safety lawDescribe the purpose of health and safety legislation and the different legislative requirements that must be followed to ensure this is achieved.2. The Health and Safety at Work etc. ActDescribe the legal duties of the employer, self-employed and, to a lesser extent, employee, to promote health and safety awareness and effective standards of safety management by every employer.3. Construction (Design and Management) RegulationsDescribe the CDM Regulations that cover the management of health, safety and welfare on construction projects. Identify what they are about, what they require, what needs to be done and by whom.4. Health and safety policiesDescribe the key principles of a health and safety policy and the organisations arrangements for putting those policies in place. Describe the key benefits of the policy, what it should contain and how.

Accreditation

Successful candidates of the SMSTS Site Management 2 Day Refresher training course will receive a ConstructionSkills Site Safety Plus certificate. This certificate is highly recognized in the construction industry and is a requirement for many job positions.

The SMSTS certificate is valid for five years, after which it must be renewed by attending the SMSTS Refresher course. The course includes a compulsory examination paper consisting of 25 questions selected by the CITB. A pass is achieved by scoring over 80 on the exam.

Exam detailsThe examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course. The examination pass mark is 80% (28 out of 35).The paper consists of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 short written questions. There are 5 safety critical questions in each exam paper. The delegate must get all 5 of these questions correct to pass the exam.
