To provide training in the safe storage, selection and mounting of abrasive wheels and discs on portable and benchmounted machines.

Designed for any person who, through their work, comes into contact with abrasive grinding or cutting wheels or requires familiarisation with the associated regulations.

Joining Instructions

All course materials are provided by the centre, including pen and notepad. There is no need to bring a photograph, this will be taken on the day whereever necessary.

Course Agenda

The Abrasive Wheels half-day training course begins with an introduction to the various types and characteristics of abrasive wheels, followed by an overview of the legislation and regulations governing their use, including the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 PUWER. We then delve into the safety aspects of using abrasive wheels, discussing hazards and precautions to prevent accidents. This is followed by instruction on proper handling and storage of abrasive wheels for longevity and safe use.

Participants will receive hands-on training on inspecting and testing abrasive wheels before use, as well as learning the correct methods for assembling, balancing, and dressing the wheels. The course concludes with a practical demonstration and participant practice session, allowing attendees to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned. The course duration is a half day, with ample time for questions and discussion.

Additional elements of the course may include a section on identifying and reporting defects in abrasive wheels, as well as proper personal protective equipment PPE to be worn when working with abrasive wheels. The course may also cover the importance of risk assessments and safe working practices when using abrasive wheels. Participants may also learn about the maintenance and care of equipment used with abrasive wheels, such as grinders and cut-off machines.

The course may also include a section on emergency procedures and first aid for accidents involving abrasive wheels. To ensure a smooth start, please arrive at least 15 minutes early for your course induction and registrationaim for 815am if your course begins at 830am. Parking is limited and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is advisable. If the car park is full, you can use the nearby Pay and Display at your own expense.
